Hillvale Gallery is dedicated to supporting, elevating, and exhibiting both emerging and established local artists working in photography and lens-based image-making. Built upon the same community-driven values as Hillvale Photo, our independent photo-lab, the gallery serves as a platform for photographers to express and expand their practice.

Hillvale Photo was founded in 2013 by photographers, for photographers—an approach that extends to our gallery. We value affordability, accessibility, and fostering a space where artists have the opportunity to present their work free of limitations; which we facilitate through our artist fee structure.

Since 2022, Hillvale Gallery has been proudly based on Edward Street in Brunswick, part of the vibrant Merri-Bek arts community. Past artists we’ve presented include James J. Robinson, Anu Kumar, Jahkarli Felicitas Romanis, Sarah Walker, Liss Fenwick, Jake Nemirovsky, Nicholas Hubicki, Marlo W and Luke Le

We’ve hosted group exhibitions including our annual fundraiser Hillvale Photo Trophy supported by ILFORD Imaging (2023–), our curated September Group Exhibition (2024) featuring 11 artists from Naarm’s photographic community, Dysturb’s Where I Lay My Head (2017) and Hillvale's Keep The Fire Burning (2018), and launched projects such as the Flat Film Archive (2017). We’ve also supported Photography Studies College and the Centre for Multicultural Youth with space for graduate shows and creative development. We are an Official Exhibiting Partner with PHOTO Festival since 2022 and collaborated with Sydney-based The Pool Collective on two solo exhibitions.

Hillvale Gallery is proud to have partnered with ILFORD Imaging, Pentax, Leica Australia, C.R. Kennedy, Perimeter Books, Urth, Photography Studies College and Metro Auto Photo.
